100% pure red grape juice is made only from pressed red grapes, with no added sugar or water. It is rich in polyphenols from the grape skins, but it is also sweet: about 60 kcal and 14–15 g of natural sugar per 100 ml. What does “100% pure” grape juice mean?
A “100% juice” label means the drink contains only fruit juice. It may be not-from-concentrate (NFC) or reconstituted from concentrate, but it has no added sugar, sweeteners or water beyond what is needed to restore the concentrate. What are the benefits of red grape juice?
- Polyphenols: red and purple grape juice contains anthocyanins and flavonoids from the skins.
- Heart health: small studies, mostly with purple Concord grape juice, suggest it may improve blood-vessel function. Evidence is limited and does not outweigh the sugar content.
- Resveratrol: present, but in much smaller amounts than studied doses; it should not be a reason to drink more juice.
- No alcohol: it offers some of the same grape compounds as red wine without alcohol.
